Your Gateway to Gold Medal Waters in the Heart of Colorado
Taylor River Anglers is Harmels’ own on-site fly shop and guide service. Located at the confluence of Spring Creek and Taylor River, we have access to some of the best fishing Colorado has to offer! In 2023, Colorado Parks and Wildlife designated the Taylor River and Gunnison River as Gold Medal trout fisheries.
Our guides know this river as well as anybody and are happy to help!

John has been guiding in Colorado since 2018. Originally from Chicago, he grew up fishing the lakes & rivers in the Midwest. Conventional fishing was his method of choice, until he picked up an old Fenwick fly rod and put his spinning rod into storage for good. Whether you’re a first-timer or seasoned angler, John’s calm demeanor & in-depth knowledge of the Taylor River make him a guest favorite.

No, anyone who is renting one of our cabins can fly fish on our private stretch of the Taylor. We also offer day passes for non-guests in our store for $150/person. Guided trips can be booked by guests and non-guests for a fee. Guided trip prices can be found on the Guided Trips page.
The main reason comes down to conservation. We have nothing against conventional fishing, but with a heavily pressured stretch of river, restricting fishing to flies only allows us to protect our resources by preventing "over-fishing." Basically, not everyone fly fishes, which allows us to limit the number of people fishing the river. We do have a stocked pond that is able to be fished with conventional fishing tackle.
Yes, we have a rental program in our fly shop for waders (XXS – XXL), wading boots (5M – 14M), wading staffs, Redington Original 5 weight fly rod/reel combos, nets, and a "full package," which comes with all of the above, plus a pack containing tippet, flies, split shot, strike indicators, floatant, nippers, and forceps.
Of course! We are always happy to offer advice for anyone stopping in the fly shop. If there isn't a guide present, we always keep our "hot flies" up to date and have a Taylor River fishing report on our bulletin board in the shop. As always, feel free to give us a call if you're looking for any fishing information.
No, we are "catch and release" only on our property. We try to protect our fish as much as possible so that everyone is able to enjoy catching them, and we ask our guests help in handling the fish properly and releasing them quickly and healthy!
Yes, but we have a limited amount of days available on our permit. If you want to fish the C&R or Spring Creek, please book early or give us notice if you are booking later in the season.
Yes, you will need a fishing license to fish the river. You do not need a fishing license to fish at our stocked pond. We don't currently sell fishing licenses at Harmels, but you can get a fishing license at cpw.state.co.us
