Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from a guided trip?

We offer half-day (4 hours) and full-day (8 hours) guided trips. All of our trips are walk/wade trips, meaning we will not be in a boat or raft, but we'll be walking in the river with our waders on. We typically meet at the fly shop (located in the store) about 15 minutes before the scheduled trip time. We will get geared up with waders, wading boots, and fly rods, have a brief safety talk, and then head down to the river. If we are fishing off property, we will make arrangements before the day of the trip for where to meet or a carpool plan. While our full-day trips include a lunch, our more common, half-day trips do not. Our guides will provide water, but feel free to bring any other snacks or beverages on the trip.

What will I learn on a guided trip?

We can tailor your trip however you would like. Please let us know in advance if there is anything specific you would like to work on. For beginners, we often treat the trip as a lesson: covering all the basics, such as rigging, casting, entomology and matching the hatch, reading the river, fighting and landing a fish, fish handling, and different fly fishing techniques. Please let us know if there is anything specific you would like to do or work on during your trip. For example, some people want to work on their casting, fishing streamers, or fly selection, while some people just want to catch fish! This is your trip, so please let us know how we can make it enjoyable for you.

Can I use my own equipment on a guided trip?

Yes, you can use any of your own equipment or use ours. We have waders from XXS – XXL and felt-bottom wading boots from size 5M – 14M. We use 5 weight rods from Redington for most of our trips. If using your own rod, a 4 or 5 weight is best, but anything from 3-6 weights can be used.

Will I catch fish on a guided trip?

We sure hope so, and we'll do everything we can to get you on some fish, but there are no guarantees. Our guides are experts at getting people to catch fish, so if you're patient and willing to listen, you have a good chance of catching a fish.

Can anyone go on a guided trip?

We have an age limit of 14 years old, unless there is an adult accompanying them. While anyone over 14 is acceptable, please be aware that the Taylor River is a difficult river to wade due to the slippery rocks and swift current. We advise anybody with any mobility issues to contact us before booking a trip, so we can offer other fishing options. We have access to other rivers, creeks, and lakes that are great options for anyone who might not be comfortable wading the Taylor.

Do you offer group trips?

Yes, as long as we have advance notice, we are able to accommodate most sized groups. We limit our guided trips to three anglers per guide, so if you have four or more, please call us to book your group.

Do I need to book a trip to fish on Harmels' property?

No, anyone who is renting one of our cabins can fly fish on our private stretch of the Taylor. We also offer day passes for non-guests in our store for $150/person. Guided trips can be booked by guests and non-guests for a fee.
